Celebrating Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Greece means entering a magical world that we can enjoy with all of our senses! Visions of great beauty; delicious flavours; intoxicating scents; and joyful melodies cause a flurry of emotions which bring back happy memories from our childhood years. The Christmas tale coming alive / numerous white and coloured Christmas lights giving the appearance of starlit skies over cities, towns, and villages / the happy and welcoming faces of their inhabitants/ decorated Christmas trees and traditional Christmas boats bringing back memories of childhood Christmases to locals and visitors alike / white picturesque villages and snow-covered mountain tops with busy ski centres/ cheerful fires blazing in traditional hotel fireplaces / fireworks lighting up the night sky on New Year’s Eve/ the custom of Momogeroi, still followed in the areas of Macedonia and Thrace / Athens and Thessaloniki welcoming the Christmas season in high spirits, with the streets and squares wearing colourful Christmas lighting and a variety of events, festivals and concerts.
The custom: In Florina, the local celebrations for Christmas and New Year’s Day include the lighting of bonfires at midnight, in the same way as shepherds did to warm up the newborn baby Jesus.

Taste

The savoury and sweet traditional dishes prepared for Christmas and New Year’s Day in Greece / the delicious turkey stuffed with chestnuts and raisins laid on the festive table/ sweet Christmas temptations like traditional melomakarona (honeyed cookies with walnuts), sweet-smelling kourabiedes (christmas butter cookies dusted with caster sugar) and delicious diples (sweet fried honey rolls dusted with cinnamon and ground walnuts) / fragrant stuffed tsourekia (a traditional sweet bread) prepared in confectioneries, mostly in Athens and Thessaloniki / the delicious chicken soup served steaming hot – popular in Crete and other parts of the country / the custom of gourounochara / St. Basil’s Pie (Vasilopita) prepared for New Year’s Day / other traditional local Christmas delicacies served across the country.
The custom: Christopsomo (meaning Christ’s bread), customarily prepared in Crete and other areas is a special sweet bread with a cross-shaped decoration and a walnut (the symbol of fertility) at its centre, served on Christmas Day across Greece. It usually contains cinnamon, honey, nutmeg and/or raisins, with slight variations. Tasting it is a …must!

Smell

The festive aromas in the atmosphere/ the warm scent of cinnamon, honey, nuts and sugar- the basic ingredients for the majority of Christmas sweets/ smoking chimneys and wood burning fireplaces in beautiful mountain villages, such as Megalo Papigo in the area of Ioannina/ the scent coming off the moist soil and the dewy evergreen shrubs and trees on forested Mt. Pelion in Magnesia/the smell of incense burning in churches in every city, town, or village / the sweet aroma of chestnuts roasting on an open fire/ delicious smells coming from the kitchens of cute little tavernas in Plaka or Psirri, Athens.
The custom: On Kefalonia island, in the Ionian Sea, locals keep a “fragrant” custom called kolonies (meaning colognes); this is a special ritual for New Year’s Eve when people sprinkle each other with cologne and perfume.

Hear

The Christmas melodies filling the air in every street of the city/ children singing carols while holding metal triangles that resonate as they strike them rhythmically with a small metal rod on Christmas Eve and on New Year’s Eve/ church bells inviting people to attend the Christmas mass / open-air concerts taking place in Syntagma square and all around Athens/ street musicians performing in the city centre/ Christmas parties held in clubs and bars all over Greece.
The custom: On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve in the morning, children knock on peoples’ doors and sing Christmas carols. According to tradition, opening your door to children singing carols will bring you good luck and prosperity!

Touch / Sense

Visit the impressive fir forest in Pertouli, Trikala, and touch real fir trees instead of their man-made Christmas counterparts / sprigs of Christmas mistletoe set with a red ribbon in vases, or adorning the front doors of houses / the beautiful Christmas ornaments in shops and malls in Athens/ the festive nightlife atmosphere in Arachova, on the south slope of Mt. Parnassus / the special vibes of the ancient oracle at Delphi, just 8 Km away from Arachova / the happy atmosphere you share with family & loved ones / touching the hand of a loved one at midnight on New Year’s Eve.
The custom: On New Year’s Day, just after the morning mass, Greeks throw a pomegranate on the doorstep before entering their houses, for good luck; the fruit’s bright red arils get scattered on the floor, and they are believed to bring prosperity, happiness and good fortune to all the family.

Η Αυτόνομη Μοναστική Πολιτεία του Αγίου Όρους (συντ.: Άγιον Όρος) αποτελεί αυτοδιοίκητο τμήμα του Ελληνικού Κράτους, που βρίσκεται στη χερσόνησο του Άθω της Χαλκιδικής, στη Μακεδονία. Περιλαμβάνει τις είκοσι Ιερές Μονές, τα εξαρτήματά τους και διάφορα καταστήματα και υπηρεσίες. Το καθεστώς και ο τρόπος λειτουργίας του καθορίζονται με λεπτομερή τρόπο, παράλληλα προς το Σύνταγμα της Ελλάδας, με τον Καταστατικό Χάρτη του Αγίου Όρους (Κ.Χ.Α.Ο.) της 10ης Μαΐου 1924.

Mount Athos (/ˈæθɒs/; Greek: Ἄθως, [ˈa.θos]) is a mountain in the distal part of the eponymous Athos peninsula and site of an important centre of Eastern Orthodox monasticism in northeastern Greece. The mountain along with the respective part of the peninsula have been governed as the monastic community of Mount Athos, an autonomous region within the Hellenic Republic, ecclesiastically under the direct jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. Mount Athos has been inhabited since ancient times and is known for its long Christian presence and historical monastic traditions, which date back to at least AD 800 and the Byzantine era.

Σύλλογος γυναικών -χορευτικό Δικαίων
Ο Σύλλογος ιδρύθηκε το 1984 με 160 εγγεγραμμένα μέλη. Ένας από τους σκοπούς του είναι να αναβιώνει τα ήθη και τα έθιμα που έφεραν οι κάτοικοι από τα πατρογονικά τους εδάφη.
Μερικές από τις δραστηριότητες του συλλόγου είναι
Κάθε χρόνο στις παραμονές των Χριστουγέννων τα μέλη του συλλόγου να τραγουδούν τα Θρακιώτικα κάλαντα στα σπίτια των κατοίκων
Να αναβιώνουν το έθιμο της Μπάμπω (γυναικοκρατία)
Το έθιμο του Τρύφωνα που έφεραν οι παππούδες από το Καβακλι
Ο εορτασμός κάθε χρόνο στις 8 Μαρτίου της ημέρας της γυναίκας.
Στις 8 Μαΐου στη γιορτή του Αγίου Ιωάννη του Θεολόγου πραγματοποιείται το έθιμο της «Πιρπιρουνας» όταν υπάρχει ανομβρία στην περιοχή προσφέροντας και «Κουρμπανη»
Στις 24 Ιουνίου ο Σύλλογος γιορτάζει το έθιμο του «Κληδονα» η της «Καλινιτσας»
Ο Σύλλογος συνεργάζεται και με την εκκλησία στην τοπική εορτή του Αγίου Δημητρίου.
Ο Σύλλογος ίδρυσε και χορευτικό συγκρότημα όπου οι χορευτές φορούν φορεσιές που έφεραν οι κάτοικοι από το Καβακλι.
Ο οικισμός των Δικαίων βρίσκεται στον Νομό Έβρου περίπου 50 χλμ βόρεια της Ορεστιάδας.
Οι πρώτοι πρόσφυγες ήρθαν από το Καβακλι της Ανατολικής Ρωμυλίας το 1917 για να εγκατασταθούν στη νέα τους πατρίδα.
Το 1920 ήρθαν για μόνιμη εγκατάσταση άλλες 20 οικογένειες Ελλήνων από το Καβακλι. Το 1924 ήρθαν άλλες 24 οικογένειες από το Μέγα Ζαλουφ καθώς και 17 οικογένειες από το Δημητρικιον της Ανατολικής Ρωμυλίας που μαζί με 3 οικογένειες Σαρακατσάνων από τον Πενταλοφο αποτέλεσαν τους επόμενους μόνιμους κατοίκους των Δικαίων.
Η παραδοσιακή ονομασία του οικισμού ήταν Καντικιον από τη λέξη Καδής. (Δικαστής)

Ο Σύλλογος Ποντίων Βορείου Έβρου «Ο ΔΙΓΕΝΗΣ» #EvrosCenter
Ο Σύλλογος Ποντίων Βορείου Έβρου «Ο ΔΙΓΕΝΗΣ» ιδρύθηκε το 1990, και έχει έδρα την Ορεστιάδα.
Στην περιοχή του Βορειου Έβρου δεν υπάρχει γηγενής ποντιακός πληθυσμός που εγκαταστάθηκε το 1922 στη Ελλάδα, Οι πόντιοι της περιοχής είναι από διάφορα μέρη της Ελλάδας.
Τα μέλη και οι φιλοι του συλλόγου προσπαθούν να διατηρήσουν, μεταδώσουν και να προβάλουν τα ήθη, έθιμα και την ιστορία του Ποντιακού Ελληνισμού, στην ευρύτερη περιοχή του Β. Έβρου.
Η Νέα Ορεστιάδα είναι η νεότερη και η βορειότερη πόλη της Ελλάδας. Ιδρύθηκε το 1923 από Έλληνες πρόσφυγες που κατάγονταν από το προάστιο Καραγάτς ή Κάραγατς και την Αδριανούπολη ύστερα από τη συνθήκη της Λωζάνης.

Κυριότερες δράσεις του Συλλόγου :

Οκτώβριο του 2008 διοργάνωσε το 14ο συνέδριο Εθνικής Αυτογνωσίας της Πανελλήνιας Ομοσπονδίας Ποντιακών Σωματίων και του Ιδρύματος Σουμελά, υπό την αιγίδα του Δήμου Ορεστιάδας .

Μάρτιο του 2016 Συμμετοχή σε συνέδριο που διοργάνωσε η Εύξεινο Λέσχη Ευρωπαίων Πολιτών, για την διεθνοποίηση της Γενοκτονίας του Ποντιακού Ελληνισμού στης Βρυξέλες στο Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοβουλίου.

Νοέμβριο του 2016 Συμμετοχή στο 17ο Συνέδριο Εθνικής Αυτογνωσίας της Πανελληνίας Ομοσπονδίας Ποντιακών Σωματείων στο Ηράκλειο της Κρήτης.

Φεβρουάριο του 2017 Υποδοχή της εικόνας της Παναγίας Σουμελά στην Ορεστιάδα.

Μάιο του 2018 Συμμετοχή σε εκδήλωση για την Γενοκτονία των Ελλήνων του Πόντου που διοργάνωσε στο Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοβούλιο στις Βρυξέλλες ο Ευρωβουλευτής και μέλος του ECR Καθηγητής Νότης Μαριάς με τη συμμετοχή του Ιδρύματος Παναγία Σουμελά και της Οργανωτικής Επιτροπής του Συναπαντήματος της Ποντιακής Νεολαίας.

Την Τετάρτη 2 Οκτωβρίου 2019 ο δήμαρχος κ. Βασίλης Μαυρίδης και ο πρόεδρος του συλλόγου μας κ. Κωνσταντίνος Ν Καλτσίδης, τοποθέτησαν στο κέντρο των θεμελίων του υπό ανέγερση μνημείου για την Γενοκτονία των Ελλήνων του Πόντου, χώμα, αγιασμό και αμάραντα από την Παναγία Σουμελά του Πόντου…!!! Το μνημείο είναι το μοναδικό μέχρι σήμερα, που φέρει στα θεμέλια του, αυτά τα τρία στοιχεία από την αλησμόνητη πατρίδα, επίσης είναι το μοναδικό που απέχει σε ευθεία 5,5 χιλιόμετρα από τα ελληνοτουρκικά σύνορα.

21 Δεκεμβρίου 2019 αποκαλυπτήρια του Μνημείου για τη Γενοκτονία του Ποντιακού Ελληνισμού στη Ορεστιάδα.

Ο πολιτιστικος λαογραφικος συλλογος Διδυμοτειχου “Το Καστρο” εκθετει στο πρωην δημοτικο σχολειο Κουφοβουνου λαογραφικο υλικο των κατοικων του χωριου. Ταυτοχρονα στον ιδιο χωρο φιλοξενειται η συλλογη του Γ. Τοπαλιδη με παραδοσιακες ενδυμασιες της Θρακης.
